One of the best known and most popular of the early drinking places in Kimberley was The in Tucker Street. Started by Stafford Parker in the early 1870's when Kimberley was still known as New Rush, the establishment changed hands several times until 1911 it was purchased by Lazarus Bloom who in 1915 re-built the old building into its present form.

In the days of Stafford Parker, the boasted not only "a bar most complete in all its fittings and appliances" but also a "fine hall and first rate shooting gallery".

The nature of the changed with its successive owners until, when rebuilt by Lazarus Bloom, it was more in the form of a boarding house cum hotel than anything else. A billiard room and a card room, which had been interim attractions, had been done away with and in 1915 the consisted of "European and Coloured Bars, large dining room with steel ceilings, sitting room, six spacious bedrooms, kitchen, pantry, ladies and gents bathrooms etc".
